Following months of lockdown, it’s no surprise the nation has turned its hand to DIY projects, with some more extravagant than others. From stylish pub gardens to swanky indoor gin bars, since March, Brits have been more creative than ever when it comes to building their own spots to enjoy a tipple or two at home.
To celebrate this creativity, supermarket Aldi, well known for its award-winning and amazing value beers, wines and spirits range, has today launched a nationwide search to find Britain’s best DIY at-home bar. One lucky ‘landlord’ or ‘landlady’ of the most inventive at-home bar will win a year’s supply of Aldi vouchers, worth over a thousand pounds[1], to help keep their shelves stocked.
The competition will be judged by two new garden pub landlords from Cheshire, estate agent Sadie Jones and interior designer Nick Threadgold. The couple not only built an impressive indoor bar, but since lockdown caused a media storm after creating ‘The Stagger Inn’, an old garden shed which has been transformed into a stylish at-home boozer. The couple will be looking for an at-home bar or pub with personality, something quirky and homely that has a real stamp of individuality.
Sadie Jones, Landlady of ‘The Stagger Inn’ Garden Pub said: “We’re very excited to be partnering with Aldi on this search for the UK’s best at home bar. We were missing our favourite pubs, but since we decided to build our own, we’ve not looked back. It was such a fun and creative project and it’s an affordable way to enjoy our favourite drinks at home – we’re thrilled with the result.”
Staying in really has become the new going out with Aldi seeing a 35% increase in sales[2] when it comes to purchasing beers, wines and spirits, showing a demand for enjoying at home pub-drinking experiences. What’s more, Brits are becoming more adventurous with their at home drinks choices, with half of cocktail drinkers now choosing to enjoy them at home[3].
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “Even though pubs and bars are beginning to open, the prospect of this is daunting for many. Research shows that we have loved our time drinking at home, so we expect appetite for enjoying a glass or two in the house to continue long after lockdown fully eases[4].
“We’re pleased to be able to offer a fantastic range of great value beers, wines and spirits so whether shoppers want to create fancy cocktails or just have a simple beer, we’ve got everything they need for an enjoyable at home pub experience.”
